STARK COUNTY BRIDLE TRAILS

Name of trail:     QUAIL HOLLOW STATE PARK
Location of trail: 13480 Congress Lake Rd NE in Hartville, Ohio
Directions from nearest main route: From Rt 619 east of Rt 43 in Hartville take Prospect (at traffic light) north (turns into Congress Lake Rd) to Park. Can also access off of Rt 224 east of Rt 43 going south on Pontius following signs.

Trail description: Most trails are wide, mowed, and flat
Type of trail : in some areas, the trails are shared by hikers and bicyclists – most of the bridle trails are separate for horses only.
Trail surface: Good in most places - groomed
Normal trail condition: Good
Trail condition during winter/wet weather: some areas are in “muck” so might be muddy
Length of trail: about 7 miles
Trailhead parking description: Area for horse trailers in parking area – possibly 4 to 5
Trailhead horse facilities: parking – hitching posts
Trailhead human facilities: portable toilet, picnic area
Unique /scenic trail features: trail winds thru pine trees, wooded area and open meadows
Trail hazards: stay on trail in swampy areas
Trail rating: Easy – Level or gently sloping terrain; consistent groomed surface; wide trail surface; shallow or no water crossings

Name of trail:      TRI-CO HORSE TRAILS
Location of trail: East Sparta, Ohio
Directions from nearest main route: I-77 to Exit 99 at Fohl Road, go east about 1 mile to Dueber Ave. SW, turn south for 4 miles to Downing St. SW, turn east to horse camp on right (about ¼ mile)

Trail description: Trails cross roads, creeks, and private property. Many trails on Muskingum Watershed property – swampy areas – can be muddy in wet weather
Type of trail : Mostly bridle
Trail surface: dirt – rocky – can be muddy in wet weather – some hills & woods
Normal trail condition: some areas are wet and muddy
Trail condition during winter/wet weather: very muddy
Length of trail: 4 different trail loops that are about 12-15 miles each
Trailhead parking description: Great, plenty of parking around circular drive on about 5 or more acres.
Trailhead horse facilities: overnight camping available, water, and picket lines
Trailhead human facilities: water, outhouses, shelter and kitchen facilities
Unique /scenic trail features: Eating places on each of the 4 trails in the towns. Green trail takes you on the towpath into Zoar, Ohio.
Trail hazards: Some areas are in the swamp – must stay on the trail.
Trail rating:
Moderate – Rolling to hilly terrain; short steeper slopes; water crossings; irregular trail surface; narrower trail surface
Challenging – Steeper hills; unimproved trail surface; deeper water crossings; wider water crossings; boggy areas
Comments: The 4 trail systems are:
ORANGE – goes north passing Cricket Valley Rodeo area and Springwood Valley Golf Course where there are hitching posts and you are welcome at the Club House to purchase food and drinks.
BLUE – goes north with orange trail and then divides off and goes east into the town of East Sparta. Hitching posts are located at the Town Pump Tavern where meals can be purchased.
RED – goes west and south to Bolivar where there are plenty of eating-places. Hitching posts are at the McDonalds (must follow part of the green trail to get to McDonalds.)
GREEN – this scenic trail goes off the red trail into Bolivar, follow signs to cross the I77 bridge to the east side of the interstate. The trail then follows along the east side of I77 where you then get on the Towpath Trail (Ohio to Erie Canal) that will take you into Zoar. You can also continue past Zoar on the Towpath to Rt 800 in Zoarville and to Camp Tuscazoar (the old Boy Scout Camp) where there are horse trails available to ride. At Camp Tuscazoar they ask you to sign in so they know you are there.

Location of trail: Western part of Stark County – Canal Fulton/Massillon/Navarre

Trail description: Limestone wide path on Towpath
Type of trail : Multi-use, hikers, walkers, bicyclists, horses
Trail surface: Limestone
Normal trail condition: Excellent
Trail condition during winter/wet weather: Excellent
Length of trail: About 25 miles going from Summit County towards Tuscarawas County
Trailhead parking description: Several parking areas for horse trailers along route. Good parking in Navarre and in Bolivar. See Stark Park Web Site for details.

Trailhead human facilities: Portable toilets
Unique /scenic trail features: Historical route of Ohio-to-Erie Canal
Trail hazards: Bicyclists! Road crossings.
Trail rating:

Comments: Horses are not permitted on section of trail in Massillon. Just north of Massillon you can pick up the “leg” of another trail going towards Dalton.
